GZS “Skopje”
Skopje Railway Station — part of a complex called the Transport Center, completed in 1981. It has 10 tracks laid on a massive concrete bridge, 2 km long. It is located less than 1 km from the center of Skopje.
History:
The old railway station in Skopje operated from 1940 to 1963 (today the Museum of the City of Skopje).
On July 26, 1963, one of the darkest days in Skopje’s history, an earthquake struck the city at 5:17 a.m. Almost 75% of the buildings in the city collapsed in just a few seconds.
After the earthquake, a major city reconstruction project began, designed by Kenzo Tange, a Japanese architect, although it was not fully implemented. The same architect is also the designer of the railway station.
